In the first sessions of Trace Talks we discussed ways in which blockchain can contribute to build smarter and trustworthy food chains, and how consumer and producers benefit from transparency. This time we chose to focus on a very specific angle: Data Ownership and the different ways it can empower farmers. Join us on 17th December at 5 PM (CEST) and let’s dive together on the world of possibilities around #FairData!

Trace Talks#3: preventing Data Colonisation

Who owns the data we share online? A modern dilemma emerged with digitalisation: although we benefit from the enormous circulation of information, we also seem to be trapped in digital marketplaces.

Similar dynamics can be seen everywhere. In the food sector, tech solutions revolutionise the ways we grow, store, transport, distribute and consume food, and all with the help of data provided by or collected from farmers and food workers.

As value chains expand beyond borders and data grows to Big Data, how do we know who exactly owns the digital information? How can we ensure farmer’s privacy in food supply chains and prevent them from being “colonised” by big tech companies?

Data by itself became the most valuable commodity of our generation. If we aim to redesign smart agri-food systems, we must make sure blockchain technology is helping farmers to thrive without reproducing the exploitative systems we know.

Marten Van Gils from Fairfood will moderate what promises to be a very insightful talk with Han Brouwers, from Solidaridad, and Shiv Aggarwal from MyEarth.id. Prepare your questions and register now!

What will you learn?

  • Define data colonisation and what is exactly is in danger at the agri-food sector
  • The current challenges and opportunities in Data Ownership
  • Find out how smallholder farmers can be rewarded for their data
